While the year to date is an improvement on 2020, it continues to be a year of flux. With so much change for the aged care industry already implemented into practice, I foresee much more change to come. With the Royal Commission handing down its Final report findings and recommendations, further industry-wide changes are likely on the horizon to raise standards, keep consumers safe, and increase compliance measures across the board.

Needless to say, now’s the time for flexibility in your practices. The recent outbreak and lockdown in Queensland reminds us of the ongoing need to be responsive to our environment, while agile and adaptive to the needs of our consumers and the wider industry. Now more than ever, services need to adapt consumer-focussed practices to better support its consumers and really understand what they want and need.

Services should note the Commission’s implementation of the Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS). The SIRS requires every residential aged care service to adopt a systematic approach to minimising the risk of, and responding to, serious incidents involving residents, as well as reporting these incidents to the Commission.

Providers are also now required to report the details of nominated infection prevention and control (IPC) leads for each service, implement antimicrobial stewardship and practice infection prevention.
