With the federal election called for 21 May 2022, we encourage people living with dementia, their families and carers to make a plan to vote.

While every person living with dementia has the right to vote, capacity to vote is specific to each individual.

If your loved one lives with dementia and is enrolled to vote, some ways to support them to participate include:

  • a reminder to attend their local polling place on the right date,
  • helping them arrange a postal vote, or
  • attending an early voting centre together.

The Australian Electoral Commission provides a range of ‘Easy read guides’ which can assist people living with dementia in simple, clear language on the voting process.

This federal election we are asking political candidates to commit to three initiatives for the health and safety of all Australians living with dementia, their families and carers.

  1. The introduction of compulsory dementia education for aged care workers
  2. The establishment of a national dementia palliative care program
  3. Renewed funding for the award-winning Dementia-Friendly Communities program
